The simultaneous rollout of an album that was announced and released on the same day was an attempt to test the waters in advance of the debut of the Billboard 200 Albums chart, which will launch next Monday, Oct. 22.
Miley Cyrus’s “Bangerz” sold 331,000 copies in the United States in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, easily outselling the previous week’s leader, and the No. 2 and No. 3 albums (5-4-3-2-1, respectively). It is the top selling album in the country. (An updated Billboard.biz report will be posted later on Wednesday.)
Billboard 200 Albums will be based on a weekly rolling sample of sales, which means that Billboard 200 Albums charts will be updated on a weekly basis, meaning the week of Oct. 22 will be the chart’s first full week of activity. There are three or four days between the original sample period and the first full week of charts, so it makes sense to have the first week of Billboard 200 Albums on the chart to be a test run.
The challenge for the first-week company, of course, was to release the album right before the chart and 0b46394aab
